Presentation of the Linear Writing

There were 5 group that had present that night. There are a few kind of idea that each group present about their essay.
After the presentation, there have some comment from Miss Zue. She emphasized something such as :
  • The writing must have a title.
  • Each key features need to add some assumptions but do not to much or extreme.
  • The prediction must be in a logic state and hopefully the proposal can be accordance with the times and logics. Both of it must included in the essay.
  • The word cannot more than 200 words.
Example of my group essay

Hours spent on activities by different age group in Someland

The table represents the hours spent on activities by different age group from teens to 70s and above in Someland. The hours spent on doing two out of all the activities shows a decreasing rate while the rest shows a fluctuating rate. (OV + CI)
The time spent on watching television slumped significantly at 30s, where it then rose at 40s+. Due to work commitments, no spare time is allocated for entertainments. (KF 1)
However, the time used on socialising with four or more people dropped by 93% with a constant rate along the age groups, as their responsibilities increases, lesser hours are spent on leisure. (KF 2)
Individual exercise shows the most inconsistent rate, from dropping by 50 at 20s to rising by 100 at 40s to falling by 150 at 50s, it then shot back up by 100 at 70s. Health issues based on old age might be the cause of the sudden boomed in hours. (KF 3)
The table indicates the reducing number of people doing group exercise from teens to 60s and above. The higher the age group the lesser the activities are carried out due to health restrictions. Government can alter this statistics by advertise the benefits of exercise through mass media. (Pi + Pii)

Main Idea (Reading)

The main idea of a passage is the thought that is present from the beginning to the end.

In finding the main idea, ask yourself these:
  • What idea is common to most of the text?
  • What is the idea that relates the parts to the whole?
  • What opinion do all the parts support?

Paragraphs usually have 2 types of sentences:
  • ------a topic sentence, which contains the main idea, and
  • ------one or more detail sentences which support, prove, provide more information, explain, or give examples.

Implied main Idea means Some paragraphs have no topic sentence. This does not mean that there is no main idea in the paragraph. When a paragraph has no topic sentence, the supporting details suggest the main idea.
The main idea is implied, or unstated, which means that you have to figure it out by yourself.

Miss Zue played some video and we need to find a suitable main idea for each of the movie.
After playing, we learned that we cannot made the main idea in a specific or general main idea. It must be balance.

Non linear & Linear Writing

Miss Zue teach us about non-linear and linear writing. Non linear means the text is not in a paragraph like an essay, for example text in a table, graph and etc. It is in free form. While linear means sentences that are being write in a paragraph.
We learned how to change non-linear to linear writing.

Non-linear writing formula :
  1. Title
  2. Over View + Controlling Idea (OV + CI)
  3. Key Features (KFs)
  4. Prediction (P1) + Proposal(P2)
Steps that can be a guidance :
Ø  Spend 5 minutes reading the graphs/charts etc.
Ø  Make sure you understand axes.
Ø  Make sure you follow lines on graph.
Ø  Focus on the key information.
Ø  If two graphs – compare.
Ø  Think about the time period – tenses.
Ø  Vary your vocabulary.
Ø  Organize information clearly.
Ø  Write neatly.
