Purpose & Author's Tone

Author's Purpose
Authors have several purpose in mind when writing something. They wrote an essay sometimes to :
  • Inform
  • Entertain
  • Persuade
All of this things can make us know their real purpose on their writing. Maybe they want to inform something to the reader,to give entertainment or to persuade the reader. There are a lot of kind of writing with their own purpose..
If the passage contains
  • facts or true information = to inform or teach
  • fiction = to entertain
  • tries to get you to do something = to persuade or convince

Here have some information:

Author's Tone
For author's tone, there have 2 basics tone with are :
  1. Positive
  2. Negative
We can see the tone after we understand the text either it is positive tone or negative tone. We can tell if the writer is showing  a positive attitude or a negative attitude through his word choice.
  • sarcastic
  • optimistic
  • pessimistic
  • indifferent
  • cynical
  • bitter
  • encouraging
  • mocking
  • praising

In this class, we had made some exercise about this topic. At the end, we can differentiate it.

Presentation Passive Voice & Pop Quiz

Last part of grammar we learned today...It was 'passive voice' that were presented by Nabila, Nina, Megat and I. My group and I were prepared the slide then we presented it to the whole class. Miss Zue helped us to explained to my classmates about this topic.
Passive Voice :  the subject of the sentences receives the action.
In passive voice, the object becomes the subject. For example :
Active voice : Din ate fried noodle. ( Din = subject, fried noodle = object )
Passive voice : Fried noodle was eaten by Din. ( Din = object , fried noodle=subject )
We can see the changes of the object and the subject from this sentences.
You can learn many things about passive voice through this :

Megat wrote the introduction, Malin wrote the 1st main idea, I the 2nd main idea and  the 3rd main idea was wrote by Elya. Then, for the conclusion, we discuss a little bit.. We settle down this essay on time!! great job for that day........

Drawing Conclusion

“Drawing conclusions is a form of critical thinking. It is relates what you see, hear and read to what you already know”. Every essay need a conclusion to ending the essay. It will show a complete essay. We need to draw a conclusion using all the facts that we can find in the passage to help us to figure out what we do not know.
Here are some expressions that point to a conclusion :
Ø  We can deduce that
Ø  Therefore
Ø  As a result
Ø  Prove that
Ø  Points to the fact that
Ø  It is believed that

Presentation Simple Past Tense & Past Continous Tense

Last presentation about grammar part. It is made by Jihan’s group ang Ifah’s group. This grammar part we need to learn very carefull. It is hard to explain if we are not understand deeply about this part.

When to used simple past tense :
1.      To talk about actions that happen at a specific time in the past.
You state when it happened using a time adverb.
2.      It can be used to described events that happened over a period of the time in the past but not now.
3.      It is also used to talk about habitual or repeated actions that took place in the past.

Spelling rules for simple past tense of regular verbs :
If the verbs ends in a consonant, +ed
E.g: return- returned
        help- helped
        cook- cooked
If the verbs ends in e, +d
E.g: live- lived
       create- created
If the verb ends in a consonant –vowel-consonant combination ( CVC ), double the last consonant  and +ed
E.g: hop- hopped
        rub- rubbed
Exception : word ending in _w, x, or _y (bow-bowed, play-played, mix-mixed)
If the verb ends in a consonant +y, change the _y to _i and _ed
E.g: worry- worried
        copy- copied
If the verb ends in a vowel +y, add _ed
E.g: play- played
        annoy- annoyed
Exception : pay- paid, lay-laid, say- said

Very important notes. From Nolek's group.
What is past continuous tense?
The past continuous tense is used to show an action that lasted for some time in the past. The actions can be interrupted by something or can be happening at the same time.

After everything is done, both group combine the game which is play a musical chair. Each  group has 6 people. They use “move like jagger” song. How to Write Inroduction for Paragraph

How to write introduction for an essay??? Every essay will have introduction paragraph. In this paragraph, it will gave some explanation abot the title. The Hook are designed to grab attention immediately and give some indication aboout the essay’s topic. Therefore, there have a few types of Hooks that we can use to start the paragraph.
·         Personal examples
·         Quotations
·         Facts or Statistics
·         Rhetorical Questions
·         Current events
·         Contrast to the Thesis Statement
·         Defination
Then we can put ‘The Transition’. It can moves the reader from the hook to the driving force of the essay.
Lastly , the intro can be ends with the thesis. It makes the contract with the reader about what will be discussed without a transparent announcement.
Elya, Amalina and I did the contrast the thesis statement hook. We choose topic about gays.
